The carpal bones form the wrist.
Comprised of 8 carpal bones that are grouped in two rows with restricted motion, this is the most complex joint in the human body.
The thumb metacarpal is the shortest and most mobile, and it articulates with the trapezium carpal bone at its base.
The wrist joint is formed by the radius and articular disk articulating with the proximal row of carpal bones, excluding the pisiform - this isn't part of the wrist.
The ulna is prevented from articulating with the carpal bones by a layer of fibrocartilaginous ligament, the articular disk, that lies over the surface of the ulna.
